Message From The Executives

Bilal Haider Syed

Welcome to Discussion Club. There are many factors that inspired me to create this club. As a child I was always curious and quite empathetic which is a good combination because it helps me understand other peoples' arguments and perspectives. I am a practicing Muslim that went to a secular public elementary school and then a Catholic high school. I have heard ideas from all points of the political spectrum and have learned quite a deal from respectable philosophers. I also take an interest in math and science, even though I may not be any good at them. As you can see, like our multiethnic/cultural country, my conglomerate of experiences is quite diverse. As such, I find myself struggling to create a truthfully coherent worldview that can help me understand the world and guide my actions. As difficult as the challenge may seem, I am determined to carry out this pursuit. And for that reason, I implore you to help me as I will help you in your journey to attain whatever ends you seek from joining this club.

My vision for this club is to foster a ground where people can come and have their questions addressed and sensitive topics discussed. Indeed, one belief I hold stronger than others, is that it is better to discuss controversial issues/ideas rather than lock them away by labeling them taboo, insensitive, racist, sexist, etc. In a liberal democracy, it makes little sense to have unpopular opinions banned. Of course, that is not to say participants are allowed to attack each other. I expect participants to push the boundaries of other people's beliefs while also accepting challenges directed towards their own ideas. It is for that reason this club is Discussion Club and not Debate Club.  Discussion is probably the best method of communication for fostering thoughtful ideas because unlike debate, there is no need for fallacious wit to conceal weak argumentation, or for pride to obscure others' perspectives; because the end goal is truth, not victory.

My role as President is to be the all-rounder and leader of the club's initiatives. In addition to dealing with the technical side of things, I help organize general meetings, accept your questions and concerns through whatever medium, coordinate with other clubs/organizations, and enjoy the thrill of an invigorating discussion.

My name is Tyler and I am excited to be the Treasurer of Discussion Club. My view of this club is to foster great discussion about great topics. As the Treasurer, my duty is to ensure everyone else focus on talking instead of thinking about financial matters - unless the topic is economics.

My life, I like to think, has been a long (but not too long) search for truth. I hope together we can have awesome discussions that peirce through veils of conformity, and in which everyone feels the capacity to express their ideas.

If you have any inquiries or suggestions on financial matters, feel free to contact me.
